Creative Process

"A creative person has to create. It doesn't really matter what you create. If such a dancer wanted to go out and build the cactus gardens where he could, in Mexico, let him do that but something creative has to go on." - Katherine Dunham

As dancers, we must feel the need to always create. Create a new step, style, routine, look, or anything else for that matter. We must always feed the creative spirit. It is something that is inside of us, a flame that cannot be put out. If we do not feed it, it will die.

I feel like the creative process is very much pushed to the side in our society today. We must do everything as everyone else does it. We must try to follow what others say is the way or "normal." When you branch away from that, you are subjecting yourself to ridicule and doubt from those around you and possibly even yourself. But at Soul Steppin', we try to harbor creativity in every way possible.

I believe in the importance of individuality. That every human placed on this planet is uniquely beautiful. Here we are, trying to look like someone else, pushing toward this so called normalcy. Going with the grain, sticking to what those around you are doing. But let me ask you this, is life all that wonderful when you just exist the way everyone else is existing?

Creativity Blossoms

This photo was taken in one of our lyrical classes during an improv movement sequence. I feel like every student I teach is capable of creating their own movement and each class starts with them getting comfortable in doing so. Great warm up routine, too! :) I asked the girls to think of levels in dance, highs, mids, and lows. When asked to think of the highest level, they grouped together to form this lift. I'm telling, it's a beautiful, beautiful thing when unique individuals join together to be creative.

If you believe in the creative process, individuality, and freedom of expression, we believe Soul Steppin' would be a great fit for you! Check us out on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or www.soulsteppinstudio.com!

Much love,

Shelbi
